NotebookLM flashcards and quizzes can turn a source collection into study questions. Their value depends on what you do after generation: check the content, attempt answers before revealing them, and test whether you can use the ideas without assistance. Google’s current documentation calls the product Gemini Notebook; readers may still know it as NotebookLM.
The workflow below follows the documented controls and adds an original study routine. It is not a claim that an AI-generated deck improves results for every learner.
How to generate flashcards or a quiz
Open a notebook with sources and edit access. In Studio, choose Flashcards or Quizzes. Use the pencil control to customise the focus and difficulty before generation. Google’s flashcards and quizzes guide explains the controls, including explanations, review options, and flashcard progress. Check the features available in your account.
Choose a focused source set
Start with one lesson, chapter, or short group of related sources. A deck built from an entire course can mix important concepts with details you do not need yet. Write a short learning target before generating: “Explain the difference between a food chain and a food web,” for example.
Check that the imported material contains the relevant text. If you are using a lecture transcript, review important terminology and names first. A transcription error can become a confidently presented flashcard answer.
A customisation prompt to adapt
“Create a short study set for [course or grade] using the selected sources. Focus on [concepts]. Include definitions, distinctions, and short application questions. Avoid incidental names or dates unless they matter to the learning objective. Keep each item focused on one idea. Use language suitable for [audience].”
Treat this as a request, not a guarantee that every generated item will match the brief. If the deck is too broad, reduce the source set or narrow the requested concepts and generate again.
Check the questions before studying
- Answer accuracy: compare the answer with the source.
- Question clarity: make sure the prompt has a clear target.
- Scope: remove trivia that does not serve the learning objective.
- Size: split a question that requires several unrelated facts.
- Coverage: look for important concepts that the deck omitted.
For example, “What is a food web?” may support a definition. “Why can removing one organism affect several others?” asks for a relationship. A useful set can include both, but the second question needs an explanation rather than a single memorised label.
Use flashcards for attempted recall
Read a prompt, pause, and say or write an answer before revealing the other side. Mark the result honestly. If you recognised the answer only after seeing it, record that as something to revisit. The documented review controls let you return to missed cards; use the source to resolve uncertainty before another attempt.
Keep an error note with three fields: concept, what I confused, and a corrected explanation. “I mixed up the direction of the arrow” is more useful than “got question 4 wrong.” The note tells you what to practise next.
Use quizzes to diagnose a misconception
Complete a short quiz without opening the source for each question. Afterwards, explain why the correct answer fits and why your chosen answer did not. If an item is ambiguous or its answer is wrong, do not count it as evidence that you misunderstood the topic. Correct or replace the study material first.
A score can identify where to look, but it is not a full account of understanding. A student who guesses a multiple-choice answer may still struggle to explain the idea in a new context.
Finish with an independent task
- Close the AI study aid and write three key ideas from memory.
- Draw a relationship between two of those ideas or apply one to a new example.
- Check your explanation against the course material.
- Choose one specific concept to revisit in the next study session.
For the food-web example, draw a small web and explain what could happen if one food source declined. The purpose is to use the concept beyond the wording of the generated cards.
What teachers can ask students to submit
Ask for a corrected card, an explanation of one missed concept, and the independent application task. This makes the learning process visible without requiring a large AI transcript. Offer a paper version or teacher-prepared set when students cannot use the tool.
Can I download the flashcards?
Google’s current help page lists CSV download for flashcards, with possible restrictions for some source content. Do not assume the same export exists for quizzes or every account. Check the deck controls before planning a transfer to another app.
