This post draws on insights from my forthcoming book on leveraging AI in academic research. The focus today is on Microsoft Word. Given its ubiquitous use in academia for significant writing projects like dissertations, theses, and journal papers, it’s crucial to explore how this familiar platform is evolving.
Throughout my academic journey, I’ve relied heavily on Word, although I’ve occasionally used Google Docs. With the advent of generative AI, Microsoft has significantly enhanced its suite of tools, introducing transformative AI features that revolutionize how we interact with Word.
For example, Copilot is now seamlessly integrated into Word, offering capabilities like engaging with a chatbot to generate content, suggesting ways to complete sentences to combat writer’s block, and enabling features like highlighting text to instantly generate and rewrite summaries.
In addition to Copilot, there are numerous other add-ins enriched with AI-driven functionalities that amplify Word’s capabilities. Below, I’ve compiled a list of some of the most impactful add-ins, particularly beneficial for academic researchers, educators, and students.
It’s important to note that using these add-ins requires registered accounts, and some may need a premium subscription. Also, while some add-ins like Grammarly and ProWritingAid offer similar features, you should choose the one that provides the most value for your specific needs. No need to install both add-ins.
