In this post we are sharing with you two good Google apps to help your kids develop their reading skills. As we all know, reading is a fundamental literacy skill whose mastery determines, to a larger extent, students’ success within and out of school. In fact,”after the third grade, students who have mastered reading use it to learn just about everything else. Struggling readers, on the other hand, are unlikely to catch up and four times less likely to graduate from high school.”
The first app is called Read Along and we have already reviewed it in an earlier post here in EdTech and mLearning. Read Along provides kids with a reading assistant that helps them through their reading process. The second app, which we discovered through Make Use Of, is called Rivet and offers over 3000 free books tailored to various reading levels.
1- Read Along (Android)
“Read Along is a free reading app for Android that helps children have fun while they learn to read.
Read Along has an in-app reading buddy that listens to your young learner read aloud, offers assistance when they struggle and rewards them with stars when they do well – guiding them along as they progress. It works best for children who already have some basic knowledge of the alphabet.”
“With a rapidly growing digital library of over 2,000 free books, Rivet makes it easy to find interesting reading material at the right level. There are engaging books covering a wide array of topics, from planets in outer space to Harriet Tubman. Every book in our library is carefully reviewed and leveled by content quality experts to ensure young readers are shown appropriate content at the right level of difficulty.”
