4 Reading Resources to Use with Students in Distance Education

Some of you emailed us inquiring about online resources for reading materials to use in their online instruction. The list below has you covered. These are some of the websites we have reviewed in the past which you can use to access a wide variety of reading materials covering various grades and topic areas. Check them out and share with your colleagues.

1- Epic


Epic provides access to thousands of high quality books, audiobooks, read-to-me books, and learning videos for kids and young learners. Students will get to choose from a rich collection of reading materials and as they read they will earn badges and achievements. As a teacher, you can create an account on Epic, select a few subjects and get book recommendations based on your students interests and reading levels. You can create individual profiles for your students and have them sign in to your group. You can then share with them reading assignments, quizzes, activities, reading materials, track their reading progress and many more.
2- ReadWorks
ReadWorks is a great website you can use with your students to help them develop their reading comprehension skills. The site offers a wide range of free educational content that include curricular materials for various grade and age groups, reading passages, eBooks, and many more. As a teacher, you can set up your digital class and start engaging your students in meaningful reading-based activities. ReadWorks offers you the tools to track your students' progress and provide automatic grading.



‘Reading Rockets is a national multimedia project that offers a wealth of research-based reading strategies, lessons, and activities designed to help young children learn how to read and read better. These reading resources assist parents, teachers, and other educators in helping struggling readers build fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.’



This is an excellent resource packed full of reading materials to use in class. It provides some helpful tools, lesson plans and interactives to use with students in your literacy classes. The four main sections of the website are : classroom resources, professional development, videos, and parent and after school resources. Each of these sections host a plethora of educational materials covering a number of educational topics. Use the search functionality on the left hand side to quickly filter your search queries and locate resources you want to use in your class.
