The theory of multiple intelligences spearheaded by the celebrated cognitive scientist Howard Gardner has received so much acclaim within the educational circles since its inception some decades ago. Gardner defines intelligence as the ability to solve problems in a given context. He argues that there are at least 9 kinds of intelligences :
- Musical–rhythmic and harmonic
- Visual–spatial
- Verbal–linguistic
- Logical–mathematical
- Bodily–kinesthetic
- Interpersonal
- Intrapersonal
- Naturalistic
- Existential
The underlying point is that intelligence is multifaceted, rich, complex and highly diverse. The echo of this theory in the teaching literature and pedagogy has been well sounded and with it comes the categorization of learning into different styles. This theory disproved the myth of one size fits all as some square pegs do not fit in the hole. However to learn more about Howard's multiple intelligences theory I would direct you to his classic book "Multiple Intelligences: New Horizons in Theory and Practice. "
