25 iPad Apps for Learning Spelling

While working on this list of iPad apps for learning spelling I came across over a hundred app which are all supposedly geared towards helping kids and young learners with their spelling but going through them I came out with only 25 and the rest was just a waste of time and effort. I might have skipped some good titles to add to this list but I am pretty sure the ones included in this selection will serve the purpose perfectly.

1- Gappy's First Words

Gappy's First Words is a good adventure for pint-sized learners just beginning to read. Spell words to close the gaps and get Gappy home while earning the parts to redesign his colorful house. From a cozy cabin to castle with a gingerbread roof, there are over 700 creative combinations to build in the fun game that gives little learners a big start on reading.

2- Simplex Spelling

Simplex Spelling improves English spelling and reading skills by using a powerful combination of phonics lessons, spelling/word patterns, our unique “reverse phonics” approach and contextually relevant spelling rules.

3- Spell with Pip

Spell with Pip is the new spelling game from Oxford University Press which combines practice with arcade-style gameplay, and bright, beautiful graphics. For children aged 4-8 years.

4- Alpha Writer

Utilizing fun and unique illustrations, your child will practice writing and reading, in a series of self-directed and engaging activities. Start with phonetics and then proceed to phonograms!

5- Spelling Monster

This educational app is a great tool that allows kids to practice their spelling words with fun interactive mini games. Kids can explore this magical world of spelling with our spelling monsters. Just enter your spelling words and the adventure begins.

6- Rocket Speller Plus

This extended version of Rocket Speller reinforces letter names & develops knowledge of letter sounds in a game that engages kids. Contains 450+ words, Adaptive Assistance, and more rockets!

7- Endless Alphabet

Set the stage for reading success with this delightfully interactive educational app. Kids will have a blast learning their ABC's and building vocabulary with the adorable monsters in Endless Alphabet. Each word features an interactive puzzle game with talking letters and a short animation illustrating the definition.

8- Pogg

Pogg is a fun iPhone and iPad educational game for young children, as well as a proven useful tool in kids' language development. It stars Pogg, a little green alien who can do all sorts of things.

9- A to Z First Words with Phonics

10- Licking Letters

Parents can select which subjects they want, set different difficulty levels, and even choose specific questions. Parents can review performance history for each subject to check how their child is doing.

12- Spelling Teacher

The Spelling Teacher app includes Julia, your child's private spelling teacher who interacts with your student while playing fun learning activities. Teacher Julia also reads words and sentences during spelling practice and while taking weekly spelling tests. Of course, if desired a student can make their own recordings of assigned words and sentences, expanding their learning and having even more fun.

13- Word Wizard

Word Wizard is a unique app that lets kids hear the sounds of letters and words using a talking movable alphabet. Featuring advanced text to speech capabilities, the app can pronounce and spell-check an unlimited number of original words and sentences built using a phonics movable alphabet.

 14- Spelling Made Simple Lite

Spelling Made Simple has been a Windows-based program for 7 years. Now this app has brought the popular application to the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad (And soon to be Mac).

15- Spell Well Lite

FREE educational game for children that teaches spelling and handwriting. Help Wordy the frog build a beautiful magic garden by spelling words correctly.

16 - ABC Spelling Magic

ABC SPELLING MAGIC 3 Gives the opportunity to practice spelling and building 5-7 letter words with consonant blends and syllables.

17- Smart Kid ABC Lite

Have fun learning the ABC's and spelling with Smart Kid ABC. Featuring HD graphics, the app has been designed for little fingers and to facilitate learning at an early age.

18- Spelling Mastery

Free Spelling Mastery - a fun spelling game suitable for all ages and nationalities. Contains over 600 English words that are most commonly misspelled. You can also listen to how the words sound (in British English). A reference dictionary containing spelling words from the game is also included.

19-  Sounds and Spelling

Sounds & Spelling is the latest children's learning book featuring popular Imagineer animals like parrots, pigs and octopuses with some new favourites like the dolphin and the fish! This interactive learning book teaches kids how to spell the names of 6 animals in the free version, and 9 animals in the farm pack upgrade. Plus they can listen to the sound the animal makes.

20- Scramble Word Game

FREE and fun picture scramble word game designed by the iKidsPad team. This free kid’s iPad app dynamically generates thousands of word scramble games at easy, medium, and difficult levels. An interactive learning game helps young children to spell more than 500 high frequency words.

21- Painless Spelling Change

The Barron’s Painless book series just took Spelling to the next level, fun!Test your knowledge and then test your skill…It’s the ultimate Spelling and arcade game challenge!

22- A Spelling Treasure

Kids learn to spell the most needed words as they play. Application presents each word by displaying a picture and pronounces the word and presents the letters that are needed to make the word. Kids use there hand to arrange the letters in the right order to make the word.

23- Word Abacus

Test your word pool in this addictive word puzzle game! Find English words by linking adjacent letter beads left, right, up, or down. Shift the letter beads like an abacus to increase word possibilities.

24- Spelling Bus

Spelling Bus is for learning to spell and practice to spell. Kids see the pictures and listens to the word and then type the spelling.

25- Cimo Spelling Sight

This is a great app for kindergarten through 3rd grade children. It teaches a combination of high frequency and sight words (from the Dolch Sight Word list).
