iPad has made teaching vocabulary to young learners way easier and much more fun. There are now a wide range of fabulous iPad apps to use with your kids to get them to improve and enrich their vocabulary and move to the next level of their language learning. I have been curating some of these apps over the last couple of weeks and here is an initial list that features 6 good apps to start with.
1- Vocab Genius
Vocan Genius is a great iPad app to help kids with their vocablary learning. It provides over 800 flashcards for some of the most useful yet difficult vocabulary words in the English language, complete with definitions, sample sentences, and synonyms. It also features over 300 “word elements” flashcards for common prefixes, suffixes, and roots.
Word SlapPs can be used to teach receptive vocabulary specific to your child’s world with the images that you choose. Upload and save photos into customizable categories, pair them with your recorded questions and share with others using Dropbox.
The Opposites, an exciting word game which challenges children (ages 7+) to match up pairs of opposing words before the screen is filled. Opposites starts with easy word pairs, like ‘up-down’, but as players level up they are challenged with more complex and abstract pairings, until they are dealing with rare descriptive and technical words, from biology, economics, politics, medicine, poetry and classical Greek prefixes!
‘Vocabulary Catcher’ series is a fast fun game that helps your child learns vocabulary in a short period of time. Children have to listen to the given words and are challenged to pop as many correct pictures as they can before the clock runs out. Children can beat their own high score or compete with other players.
5- World’s Worst Pet Vocabulary
World’s Worst Pet exposes students to over 1000 Tier Two words at 6 different levels through four engaging games. Aligned to the Common Core, this app provides student-friendly definitions, a playful narrative, a fun reward system and thought-provoking writing prompts!
VocabularySpellingCity is a fun way to learn spelling and vocabulary words by playing engaging learning games using any word list.
