All writing starts with an idea which is then expanded and elaborated, but coming up with ideas to write about is not always easy particularly when you have to teach different classes. This is where digital writing prompts come in handy.These are web tools that you can use to generate ideas and story starters for students to write about. I have compiled some of these tools for you below , check them out
1- Things to Think About

Kids’ Things to Think About provides 100 prompts to spark thinking for written responses and encourage conversations about ideas and issues for kids. Created by students and teachers in Michigan, it can be used in classrooms or with families by allowing children to explore the prompts and by using them to guide a discussion or lesson.

This is a good tool that can helpyou generate new ideas to be used for writing short stories, plays or any other  writing task. To generate a story starter simply click on the button “click here for a random story sentence” and you will be provided with a new idea. 
3- Plinky
Plinky is another wonderful tool for writing prompts. Everyday, Plinky provides a questions and users should write an extensive answer to it with the ability to embed pictures, maps, playlists and many more. Answers can also be shared through popular social media websites and major blogging platforms.
This is a story starter tool provided by Schoolastic. The way this tool works is pretty simple. First choose your story starter theme from the four themes offered: Adventure, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, and Scrambler. Next , type in your name and select your grade; now to get a Story Starter, click the SPIN lever and all four wheels will turn, or spin one wheel at a time with the SPIN THIS WHEEL buttons. When you find the story starter you wantchoose  a format for your story: notebook, letter, newspaper, or postcard and start typing your story.
Imagination Prompt enables you to generate random story starters by a simple click. You don’t have to register or download any software, everything is done online. It works pretty much like Story Starter tool above.
Boom Writer is a popular platform that provides story starters and this is how it works :
  • A story start is the first chapter of the book. The rest of the story is up to you.
  • The story start could be written by a professional writer, a teacher, you or your classmates, or maybe even a celebrity!
  • Take the story where you like. The only limits are your imagination and a word count. At the same time, other BoomWriters will be writing their own version of what happens next.
  • When you’re done , you submit your entry for review.
  • You and the other BoomWriters vote on the entry you think is the best.
